From the northern German province to the urban jungle of Berlin, and then through the country’s most renowned clubs: Laura Daede and Steffi Frech have embarked on the artist life with a mixture of dreaminess and creative urges, but without forgetting their roots. As CHILDREN, they create surefooted retro pop in songs such as “Hearts” and “Dschungel” that celebrate the plastic sound of the early 2000s. At the same time, they shine with discerning production, handmade instrumentation and the careful use of no-frills effects. More than its predecessor, this year’s sophomore album Hype is characterized by soft, ethereal sounds that make an impressive backdrop for the duo’s on-point two-part harmonies. The title couldn’t be more fitting, because these ladies will bring fresh glory to German synth-pop.
