DIE STERNE | LIVE
2020 is the year that sees the release of Die Sterne’s self-titled record – after eleven studio albums. It seems to be a nod to the changed line-up, but also a tongue-in-cheek statement. The last remaining founding member, Frank Spilker, actually succeeds in making this cross between funk-loving indie, 60s disco charm, and political pop punchlines a new beginning, but also a logical continuation of the past. The typical Sterne style, including their sociocritical wit, is still there, but collaborations with Von Spar, the Düsseldorf Düsterboys, and Kaiser Quartett give their sound a new spin. This keeps the work of the band, which is more of a collective at this point, as fresh as it’s always been. Strings and choirs, but also krauty guitars and smooth synths have been added to their repertoire. A bold move, but as Spilker says: “I like bold, because it shows a way ahead instead of being nostalgic.” The man’s a star, even after all these years.
